Europe (Schengen) passport validity rules for Belgium citizens
The rule
As a Belgium citizen, you are exempt โ your passport (or national ID card) only needs to be valid for the length of your trip.
The Schengen Area (most EU countries plus Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland) requires non-EU visitors' passports to be valid for at least 3 months beyond the date they plan to leave, and to have been issued within the previous 10 years. Both rules are checked at boarding and at the border โ a passport can show a future expiry date and still be refused under the 10-year rule. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens are exempt: their passport or national ID card only needs to be valid for the trip.
Also required for Europe (Schengen)
- Non-EU visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area.
- Visa-exempt non-EU travelers (including UK, US, and Western Balkan nationalities) will also need an ETIAS online travel authorization once it launches โ expected late 2026.
Passport too close to the limit?
Renewing can be faster than you think: most European countries offer an express service (often 1โ2 weeks) or same-day temporary passports, and US regional passport agencies (including Dallas and Houston) can issue a new passport within days for urgent travel. One caution: temporary or emergency passports are not accepted by every country โ check before flying on one.
Frequently asked questions
Do Belgium citizens need 3 months passport validity for Europe (Schengen)?
No. As an EU/EEA/Swiss citizen, you are exempt from the Schengen third-country rules. Your passport or national ID card only needs to be valid for the duration of your trip.
Can Belgium citizens travel in Europe with a national ID card?
Yes. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens can travel within the Schengen Area using a valid national ID card instead of a passport.
