Europe (Schengen) passport validity rules for United Kingdom citizens
The rule
Your passport must be valid for 3 months beyond the date you plan to leave the Schengen Area.
The Schengen Area (most EU countries plus Iceland, Norway, and Switzerland) requires non-EU visitors' passports to be valid for at least 3 months beyond the date they plan to leave, and to have been issued within the previous 10 years. Both rules are checked at boarding and at the border โ a passport can show a future expiry date and still be refused under the 10-year rule. EU, EEA, and Swiss citizens are exempt: their passport or national ID card only needs to be valid for the trip.
A worked example
Say you fly to Europe (Schengen) on 1 November 2026. Your passport must be valid until at least 30 April 2027 (assuming a 90-day stay โ a longer trip pushes the date later). If it expires even one day earlier, the airline can refuse you at check-in โ this is the #1 reason travelers get denied boarding.
Donโt do this math by hand. Run the free 20-second check with your real dates and get a clear green, yellow, or red answer.
The 10-year rule
Europe (Schengen) also refuses passports issued more than 10 years before the day of entry โ even if the expiry date is still in the future. Check the issue date on your passportโs photo page.
Also required for Europe (Schengen)
- Non-EU visitors can stay up to 90 days in any 180-day period across the whole Schengen Area.
- Visa-exempt non-EU travelers (including UK, US, and Western Balkan nationalities) will also need an ETIAS online travel authorization once it launches โ expected late 2026.
Passport too close to the limit?
Renewing can be faster than you think: most European countries offer an express service (often 1โ2 weeks) or same-day temporary passports, and US regional passport agencies (including Dallas and Houston) can issue a new passport within days for urgent travel. One caution: temporary or emergency passports are not accepted by every country โ check before flying on one.
UK urgent passport service โ 1-day and 1-week options (GOV.UK) โ
Frequently asked questions
How much passport validity do I need for Europe (Schengen)?
Europe (Schengen) requires your passport to be valid for 3 months beyond the date you plan to leave the Schengen Area. Airlines check this at check-in and border officials check it again on arrival.
What happens if my passport doesn't meet Europe (Schengen)'s validity rule?
The airline will normally refuse boarding at check-in โ this is the single most common reason travelers are denied boarding. If you board anyway, border officials can refuse entry on arrival. Renewing your passport before the trip is the only reliable fix.
Is the validity counted from my arrival or departure date?
From your departure: Europe (Schengen) counts the required validity from the date you plan to leave, so a longer stay means you need a later expiry date.
